Before I say anything I want to clarify that I really hesitated posting this thread, there's a lot of wounds that I could accidentally reopen and that's the last thing I want to do--but I also feel like this needs to be said. If I'm wrong about that, tell me so and I'll apologize for this thread.
A short recap: a friend of mine was over at the house today and was browsing Encyclopedia Dramatica, laughing at various things and showing me them. One of the links on one of the pages linked to something called Stiletto. When I clicked on the link it was him, all right, as I knew it was probably going to be. The first thing I said was, "Damn... I knew that guy." Though I didn't know him in real life, I did enjoy his posts here at IIDB--and I'm not just saying that as some rite of farewell. I recall joking with him over his hobbies in some threads one or twice and him responding in a humorous manner. But, this thread isn't about my reaction to it--I wanted to ask a question or two in regards to this. Those of you who have browsed Encyclopedia Dramatica in the past, or know about it, at what point is it the anonymity of it all building a wall between a person simply laughing at a random event, or having to face the reality of the situation? My other question was going to be opinions towards the website page, but I figured that would be answered without me asking. And if the person who wrote the page is from here: the page isn't funny. Not particularly because it hurts my feelings, I don't take offense too easily at this stuff (though it did invoke an emotional response from me). It's not funny simply because it just sucks at humor. |

Wow, that's fucked up. They could have at least made it funny.

I may be overthinking this, but it leads me to believe this was done more out of a hurried spite than a pure sense of humor being indulged.
Or maybe they genuinely thought it was funny and their sense of humor sucks, I don't know. |

So what's the point of that site? Making fun of internet killers who killed because they were insecure or made fun of? Seems counter-productive. I don't see the point.

Times like this make me feel that the anonymity that the internet provides is a bad thing. People take it to mean that they can do whatever they want without repercussions. Just because someone doesn't know who you are doesn't give you the right to be a complete fuckhead. It's not just relegated to 3am Counterstrike games either. I see it everywhere, even here; people saying things that they would never say to a stranger face-to-face or even over a telephone. People should just take a minute to think that it's not their inanimate computer they're insulting/mocking/whatever. It's another person.

Internet meta-sites are almost always devoid of humor.
This one seems to be no exception. |

I wonder how many of the people on that list are goons. I only bothered clicking on one of the other peoples links, but so far I'm two for two.
