Lightbulb "Religious atheism" (derail from Exodus Decoded thread)

While it's correct that many exploit Christianity, it's not true that ALL do. Of course, atheists likely won't see it that way because it's beneficial for them not to see it that way. This way, you can go on and live the atheist way of life (whatever I say is moral is moral, i am my own god, etc.) without worrying about much of anything. Right? :Cheeky:

By the way, the religion of atheism also seems to be a source of profits for many as well. Just look at the PAID ADVERTISEMENTS at the top of this board, along with all the other atheist-related products (i.e., t-shirts, bumper stickers, etc.) that are available on the web and elsewhere.
I guess one of the only differences (when it comes to money) is that athesists don't use a collection plate.

Nuff said.

P.S.: It's been a while since I've been here (got bored with the same ole' unanswered and/or unanswerable questions posed every day), so I thought I'd just come back and see what kind of smoke was being blown by the atheist-intelligent religion now.

Nobody said that all do.

Find me an atheist who says that all Christians are exploitive.

This is a non-sequitur in relation to whether some Christians exploit other Christians. It's also philosophically ignorant.

There's no such thing.

I see Diogenes the Cynic has failed to elaborate any on the quote above. Wonder why? :Cheeky:

As to your other points, even though no atheist in his/her right mind would probably say ALL Christians are exploitive, it seems to be your intention to paint a broad picture regardless (again, for your benefit).

How so?

I disagree. An atheist religiously (look it up) observes the traits, theories, etc. associated with atheism, just as a Christian religiously observes and tries to follow the traits, theories, etc. of Christianity. The only difference (to me anyway) would be the deity. See my first post in this thread to know who this deity (person) is.

Quite - I have the hobby of not-stamp collecting. It's a great hobby.

Not at all. Atheists just have a more general trend toward science and skepticism, and so look up things in relation to the world in order to form a consistent worldview. While there are many different kinds of atheists (and surely those who see it as an anti-god thing and thus a religion) most of are simply people who are interested in the natural world. We observe this stuff not because of our atheism. We are atheists as a result of out skeptical view of the world and the information derived from it. On a side note, I religiously collect comics, does that mean I'm a member of the Marvel Comics united Church?

Lol.

An Athiest technically is one who does not believe in any God.
I wouldnt call that a theory or traits (plural here) equivalent to Christianity.

Its like this, if i said that PWDLT designates People Who Dont Like Tomatoes, do these people share traits and/or theories like Christianity? i certainly dont think so.

He's simply pointing out a fact. Christianity is inherently a large sect that can be made money off of by people attempting to be tricky. His quote didn't happen to say "All Christians exploit eac other". While there have been a large number of Christian charlatans (Though i wouldn't say compared to the number of Christians, percentage whise is likely similar among all groups) his statement could easily and likely have meant greedy people in general would attempt to exploit Christians. You simply chose to jump on the statement in a way to attempt to make atheists look bad.

Then you religiously observe your skeptical views of the world and the information derived from it. No proper (or formal) name (i.e., The Skeptical World Viewer religion) has to be given to it.

No, but you still "religiously" collect comics. Again, no formal name has to be associated with it (especially with the word "Church" in it as you have used ridiculously in your quote above). Why did you use the word "Church" anyway? Why didn't you call it something like the Marvel Comics Association? Yup.

Baseless assertions? Yup! I don't religiously observe any of this. Doing something "religiously" is an adjective that simply is a euphamism for "with great passion and intensity." Unless you describe religion as any set of beliefs, than atheism is not a religion. All it is is a philosophical position based on the evidence. How can you question science? we can prove science works in labs. do you think it's just magic?

Ad hominems with no substance! I was using humor to attempt to show you how your argument doesn't follow. But I find that unimportant now. you're telling me now that my comic collecting IS a religion. Ar emy political beliefs likewise religion? how about the foods I eat? I vigorously eat a certain set of foods, because I like them and they are healthy for me and I revolve alot of my life around that fact. Is this a religion too? by your definition, YES!

So no, unless you use a fanciful, unrealistic and uncommon definition of religion, than no, atheist isn't a religion. it's the LACK of one. Unless of course, you consider bald a hair color.
