I mean among the televangelists, of course. The competition for this cup is fierce. They are one and all imbeciles, but a few of them (like Jack van Impe) are more or less harmless buffoons. Others, like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, are truly sinister, antidemocratic demagogues. This morning (on the Spike Channel, of all places), I saw the odious Jimmy Swaggart pathetically trying to hawk some CDs of his singing during his glory days in the 1970s and early 1980s, before his appetite for whores discredited him, and a few weeks ago, on one of the local public-access channels somebody was showing Peter Popoff, unmasked as a fraud by James Randi and taken off the air 20 years ago. He's back, selling "Jordan River water" for its curative powers.
But my personal "favorite" is the evil D. James Kennedy, who refers to the ACLU as the Anti-Christian Legal Union. He claims freedom of religion in America is under serious attack, and that Christians are not allowed to express themselves freely for fear of the ACLU, while anti-Christians get a state subsidy to publish their filth. (Yes, that Mapplethorpe abomination is going to be providing these morons with ammunition forever, whether or not Mapplethorpe ever gets another government grant. For what it's worth, he shouldn't have had one in the first place.) Kennedy describes it all in broad, general terms, of course, and depends on a totally acritical audience not to challenge him to get specific. Precisely because he has the bully pulpit where no one can contradict him and he is free to misrepresent American history and law ad libitum, he is in my view the worst. |

Mapplethorpe won't be getting anymore gov't grants...that's for certain. He died in 1989.
Edit to add: God's nephew Pat Robertson is the worst in my book. |

Pat Robertson is perhaps the worst because his reach into the mainstream is fairly deep. He is obviously a leper messiah.

He has a worthy successor as a camera-squinter, namely Joel Osteen. I have never understood how anybody could stand to watch these two. They both resembled the nerds you hated on the playground---you know, the ones who were forever arguing about the rules instead of getting on with the game.

I think the Faith Fake Healers are probably among the lowest of the low, since their patients often give money to the healer and then don't seek real medical treatment. That puts Benny Hinn at the top of the list for me.
