Man appointed mortal sorrow. The Blessed God shall come down teaching. His death shall bring (the) despairing rest.

Now, I think the creation story is a myth. Since we evolved, there couldn't have been an Adam. So, somebody obviously made up the genealogies. But, why did they pick names with such meanings? Many Christians will point to this genealogy as being proof that God sent Jesus. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how this message got there? I am so perplexed by this!!

Methuselah seems to have a range of meanings. However, the intended meaning can be arrived at mathematically. "When he dies judgment", "after him it comes", or I guess "his death is a sword" can all fit the narrators purpose.

Methusaleh lived 969 years (Gen 5:27)

187 years to the birth of Lamech (5:25)
182 to the birth of Noah (5:25)
600 to the flood (Gen 7:6)

He died then in the year the flood started 187 + 182 + 600 = 969.

His name (in near-term) is referring to the judgment of the flood - i.e. when he dies judgment.
