See for example Genesis 14:13

Thank you Andrew.

So the Hebrews lived beside the oaks of the Amorites? Were captured along with the nephew Lot? I find it difficult to figure out who was who in that script.

And is that what you think occurred outside the palace of Pilate? EVERYONE? Or just a a loud crowd of stirred up people... like what might show up outside an abortion clinic during a protest, at the funeral of a soldier with the Fred Phelps crowd, the trial of a notorious criminal, or the execution of a serial killer.

And yes they do carry picket signs that read very similar to FRY THE BASTARD and they shout and throw things too.

Good catch! I might however, suggest that a later interpretation might not be truly indicative of what people at the time thought about the children of Abraham.

"The modern word "Hebrew" is derived from the word "ivri" which in turn may be based upon the root "`avar" (עבר) meaning "to cross over"."
Sounds reasonable that they would refer to the monumental event of crossing over the Jordan into the promised land to identify themselves...

Using Genesis (written between 950 BC and 500 BC) to back date the use of the term Hebrew is not very scholarly. It is like someone today saying Abraham Lincoln was really a big government, civil rights Democrat.

In the present form of Genesis the Hebrews (the descendants of Eber) are a broad subdivision of the Semitic peoples (See Genesis 10) Abraham and relatives are all Hebrews.

As kcdad correctly pointed out, this may well not be the original meaning of the term.

In Jesus day not all Jews wanted him dead, so all did not cry "crucify him, crucify him".

Then one who had escaped came and told Abram, the Hebrew, who was living by the Oaks of Mamre the Amorite.

ok, there is portrayed the people of Lot, what name did they claim? The Hebrew who had been captured with Lots tribe, and the Amorites who lived in the Oaks. What, did this mean, a forest of trees or a boundary line or something else? Also, Lots tribal name seems to be unknown.

I don't see Abram as being Hebrew. I see Hebrews as joining to the house of Abraham as a confederate tribe.

Are you arguing with yourself?

Or are you making it up as you go along? The children of Abraham are from a confederate tribe?

Arguing with myself? Making it up as I go along? No, just making some points in the story.

"Now, the Lord said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country(Haran) and from thy kindred (Chaldeans), and from thy fathers house(name), unto a land that I will show thee; and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing. And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee, and in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed." (Gen.12:1-3 KJV)

Where does this identify Abram as Hebrew?
