Assumptions that a historical Arthur led Welsh resistance to the West Saxon advance from the middle Thames are based on a conflation of two early writers, the religious polemicist Gildas and the historian Nennius, and on the Annales Cambriae of the late 10th century. The 9th-century Historia Brittonum, traditionally attributed to Nennius, records 12 battles fought by Arthur against the Saxons, culminating in a victory at Mons Badonicus. The Arthurian section of this work, however, is from an undetermined source, possibly a poetic text.

because people's souls and salvation are not based on Arthur's existence.

In what way is Jesus not treated much the same as Arthur? Don't most people assume that there was probably a historical core to the Arthurian legends?

No


Read the quote above carefully - it is openly acknowledged Arthur might not have existed - that is not the case with Jesus.

Βased on my limited experience with the Arthurian legend, it's actually more contentious than the Christ legend.

Oh yes, because atheists certainly base their academic positions of the existence of Jesus on whether or not they will go to hell.

It might be interesting to check their relative contentiousness carefully. For example, why is not the phrase "cycle of romances" used about the gospels?
