A while back I had a conversation with a local fundy. He was talking about what he had against the mianstream Christian churches. Such as the pastors have too much control over the people, therefore people will belive what ever they say without question. He had a real problem with that. He also has challenged a local Southern Baptist preacher to debates on a number of ocasions. But this Paster turned him down every time. Guess he is unwilling to defend his beliefs in front of others. The fundy said that this proves his point that the pastors don't want to be questioned.
Last night I was reading the post about GWB urging the courts to allow the Ten Commandments on government property. I said to my grandmother that this was a blatant violation of CSS. She said that they should be on display. She gave the bible reasons, why the should be on desplay. I countered her by saying that this is endorsing a religion. The kind of thing that constitution is says not to do. It is endorsing Christianity. And there are so many other religions out there too. If we cater to one we have to cater to the all. She then said that Christianity is not a religion. I was curious to know where she got this load of bullshit so I asked her what is you basis for this Idea? She said the pastor said so. This is that same pastor that refused to debate with my fundy friend. I said to her that a religion is a cult, group or groups that worships a god or gods. of course she had no come back for that. I wish that pastor would have the balls to defend what he beliefs. I guess he just one of those people who does not want to be question and wants total control over his followers. |

It comes from one of the more modern Evangelist catch phrases. "Christianity is not a religion, it's a relationship with Jesus."
I think it's mainly reactionary, probably due to the fact that most people think of "religion" as something silly and dogmatic that doesn't make a whole lot of sense and generally does more harm than good. This way, when atheists tell Christians "religion is stupid and makes no sense," an Evangelist can cop out by saying, "you're right, it is. But I don't have a religion, I have a relationship." Ignore it. It's just doubletalk, exchanging one word for another. |

Don't get bogged down in semantics. Just tell them "that's a cute little saying, but you're completely wrong." |

It still worshiping a god. That makes it a religion. No amout of double talk or sugar coating will change that. In thier minds it might. Fact are Facts. It is the worship of a god. that makes it a religion.

sort of like the reversal of the 'atheism is a religion' argument.
I've heard it said by some that Christianity isn't a religion because it is true, therefore it is not strictly speaking a religion. |

Instead of fighting them, let's cave in totally to their wishes. Let's affirm that Christianity is not a religion, so that the Free-Exercise Clause doesn't cover it.
