Doesn't the veil have to do with worshipping only? If I recall correctly, it was because they were in the presence of angels, something Christians wouldn't have easily thought up of, being a Jewish tradition. My memory is faint on this point, but it comes from "Paul and Qumran". I'll see if I can find that book again and repeat the passages a little more clearly.
