You are correct that the earliest references for a Siddharta Gautama (Buddha) are either comparable or later than the earliest references for a Jesus (Christ). I think the problem lies in the fact that many more scholars have an intense interest in the "historical Jesus," as opposed to those looking for a "historical Siddharta." Scholars of Buddhism, almost to a man, recognize the limited nature of their evidence.

Um, twenty years later is still decades after his death (two, that is, but decades nonetheless).

His name is CAESAR.
