I like how some denominations added the phrase "patient endurance" to lighten the burden of these saints. It sounds like hell on earth to me.

First off, no one can know for certain if they are "saved". Salvation is a gift of God and only God can give it. Since we cannot "earn" salvation, we cannot know if we are indeed "saved".
That's not what the author of I John 5:13 thought:
Quote:
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (emphasis added)

Leaving aside the issue of whether this doctrine is scriptural, and certainly leaving aside whether it is true, I think the reason the doctrine catches on is that it has an emotional appeal. Read any Jack Chick comic,

http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/1018/1018_01.asp

It's just very appealing, the idea that an action I take now, only requiring a minute or two, can have such profound eternal consequences. I don't have to start going to mass once a week and doing good things for this to work. Perhaps God will guide me to do good, or perhaps he won't, but either way, I get into heaven.

So the point is that the doctrine is appealing to potential converts, and those are the people you want to get, if you're trying to spread a doctrine.
