Default Informative websites on the Buddha and Buddhism?

Hello, all, I'm in the process of writing a fantasy novel, and one of the main religions bears a striking similarity to Buddhism in our own very real world. I've read as much Buddhist literature as I can get my hands on in the offline world, but living in a small West Virginian town, I really don't have access to a great deal of the proper literature needed.

What I need are websites with tons of information on Buddhist history, Buddhist philosophy and beliefs, Buddhist rites, and so on. Even better, would be a Buddhist message board!

--thanks NB

There are some links available in the sticky thread. As for dedicated Buddhist forum, I remember this one:

http://www.lioncity.net/buddhism/

NOTE: I mostly just lurking, never post anything in that forum.

Do share with us some synopsis of your book, if finished. I think MD forum will be a good spot.

Cheers!

For the straight dope on Theravada Buddhism try the Access to Insight website.

For a general website that should give you links to most forms of Buddhism, try Tricycle magazine.

A good site for answering basic questions about buddhism:

http://www.saigon.com/~anson/ebud/ebidx.htm

Here's another one, a virtual buddhist library:

http://www.ciolek.com/WWWVL-Buddhism.html

Warning: Some of the sites are unaccessible.

So you're asking people for info on Buddhism so you can write a book making fun of it?

Dr. Goose, there is nothing in the OP that suggests to me that the book being written would make fun of Buddhism or the religion depicted in the fantasy novel.

I, personally, believe Buddhism, like all other organized religions, to be full of monkey shite. However, I'm writing a fantasy novel, with active deities, operational magic, and so forth.

--hence, I'll probably portray this "fictional Buddhism" in a good light NB

...surely, there are other message boards, in English, devoted to discussing Buddhism?

--if not, I despair for the future of the faith, as virtually every other religion has dozens NB
