In my book the bible has been one of the biggest single thought-crimes on the planet in the last 1700 years: history, ideas and principles, people and beliefs were hijacked by a cheap imperial fiction.

You can label anything you want as blasphemy or heresy, as long as you don't propose criminalizing it.
Its about the defence of the freedom of speech and treating people with respect independent of their religious beliefs IMO. The Christian hegemon has been BLINDLY held in sway for too long and is failing. These rediculous Blasphemy laws are a signal of its weakness. I originally thought these Irish laws were some hoax.

This is one of several chapters in the Christian Bible that can give a scriptural foundation to Christian anti-Semitism.
In fact, this verse (John 8:44) is directed primarily towards people with the intent to murder rather than simple unbelief.
They only say that it can give a scriptural foundation to Christian anti-Semitism. There are other verses that Christian anti-Semites relied on more directly.

But I would doubt that the point of the verse is would-be murderers. The point is conflict between Jesus and "the Jews."

I guess it doesn't surprise me. It seems the next logical step from religious anti-defamation laws and such.
