First welcome, and it sound very familiar to my own. Just one minor nitpick...
I'm not sure of the meaning implied by "Palestine was not a part of the Roman Empire until 6 C. E". The whole area was a vassal state of Rome by most any definition. When Herod died, the Judean area was divided up among his sons. His will made his son Archelaus king, and his other sons tetrarchs, Antipas in Galilee and Perea, and Philip in the northeast. Augustus approved the will, but reduced Archelaus to ethnarch of Judea and Samaria. I agree with other posters, we have no evidence of any census during this time frame, and certainly none that would force people to go to their place of birth. The Luke scenario is ripe with historical problems.
