A few years back I had a reference book that told of a "Jesus" character that was in Israel about 100 years before the more popular model. He was a bit of a trouble maker and ended up imprisoned by the jewish powers and eventually hung for blasphemy or something like that.

In a ritualistic house cleaning all my very thick books that I never open get chunked out. Can anyone reference this character? :notworthy |

The reference you are looking for is probably here http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/~humm/Topics/JewishJesus/ . This is probably the one you are talking about - Baraitha: Redeeming evidence sought. An account of the heresy trial of someone named Yeshu.

There is an article that briefly discusses this Jesus here, though some of the previous references may be more in depth. |

Yeshua was a very common Jewish name for several hundred years there. Seeing that the name infers "Yahweh saves" it was used a lot after the Maccabee revolt.

Also, I love how when Roman historians refer to a guy named jesus who was crucified, then "obviously" they were talking about THE jesus. Then if you bring up that there was a jesus stoned for blasphemy they will say that there were lots of people named jesus, so it couldn't possibly have influenced the gospel writers. |
