The key point is, I think, that WS ENOMIZETO *does* exclude someone from the geneology. rhutchin wants it to be Joseph who is excluded from the genealogy so that he can explain Heli as Jesus' grandfather, but it isn't, it is Jesus himself who is excluded from the genealogy.
This is demonstrated by the grammar and the plain meaning of the text: it reads "SONASTHOUGHTJOSEPHOFHELIOF", not "SONASTHOUGHTJOSEPHBUTREALLYMATERNALGRANDSONOFHELI OF", and there is no way that the latter could be understood from the former: if a writer meant the latter but wrote the former then the only possible conclusions are that the writer was either illiterate or deceptive. So the contradiction regarding the name of Joseph's father stands. |
