The answer is quite simple. They didn't go anywhere, because they didn't yet exist. Christianity arose in the late first century/early second century, and origins were cast back behind the screen of the Jewish-Roman war of 70 CE. It made it impossible to check sources, so they worked with a blank canvas. Josephus was utilized to provide historical flavor.

I have to agree with this summary, as there is simply no credible evidence for the existence of Jesus or Paul or even the Christian movement that can be reliably dated to the 1st Cent CE.

It's a pretty inflammatory idea and it probably strikes many to be on par with other crazy conspiracy theories. When one looks for the evidence to contradict this assertion, one comes up with nothing really. This idea would further explain why so many of the Second Century apologists for Christianity seem utterly oblivious to the Gospel story.

sheffa .. just a little question. Is there some credible evidence for the existence of John the Baptist and his followers in the 1st century CE ?
