In his most recent post at his blog Roger draws our attention to a military calendar found at Dura Europa. In that text I believe we see Commodus's Christian concubine Marcia referenced as Marcianae. She receives divine honors and I would assume those priests managing her cultus would be the Marciani (Latin is not my strong suit). It has long been noted that there are strong parallels between the story of Marcellina the Carpocratian coming to Rome and Marcion's. Jerome identifies her as the first Marcionite. Marcellina is another feminine form of Marcus. |
