I was at work a little over a year ago when I realized I was an atheist. I didn't instantly start pleasuring myself, and while I don't remember specifically, I doubt I tore my knickers off and rubbed one out the second I got home either.

Seriously, even if there is a lot of talk on these boards about masturbation - something other posts have brought into doubt - I would say it is more likely an indication of the willingness of the users of this board to talk openly about pretty much anything, rather than an unusually high percentage of self-gratifiers among our clientele.

Another thing that works is picking your nose first. I figure God must look the other way when he sees someone doing that. So with any luck, his gaze stays averted long enough to get things taken care of. And it's not like picking your nose is a sin.

Seriously, I think that if atheists do indeed have a preoccupation with masturbation, it's because the practice has historically had taboos attached to it, and these taboos are associated with the Christian religion. So, since many atheists are such iconoclasts, they would enjoy talking about the subject. And really, the taboo's decline is at the funniest stage: few people take it seriously, so there's no serious public-education problem; but it's still possible to find some kook who does think this way, and make fun of his narrow-minded and anti-pleasure views.

When I was still in an Opus Dei-run boy's school, there was a case of a senior (I was a freshman) going atheist to justify his self-stimulation (I hope it actually progressed beyond that). Catholicism and puberty, not a good mix. Last thing I heard was that he argued with a priest with a Philo doctorate and ended in tears (don't know why).
