Welcome to the IIDB/Christian Forums thread on IIDB.

As many of you are already aware, this thread has developed what some might call "a life of its own" here, and has been continuing for quite some time. This most recent version of the thread was split from here.

As some of your may be aware, there are are other forums here at IIDB. We have a lot of interesting conversations around here, and you might think about joining in. Unlike CF, theists are not restricted in where they may post, although please note that the secular community forums restrict certain kinds of content.

Quickly, let's review the most pertinent rules to this thread:

1. The rules here at IIDB prohibit insulting, flaming or attacking IIDB members. For a list of people that are registered both here and at Christian Forums, please see the members list at:

If you are not on the list and would like to be, or would like to update or correct your information please PM Spherical Timedirectly. Only people that the moderators of IIDB are aware are members are protected under this policy, but self-banned members at IIDB are still protected here, as per administrator ruling.

2. PMs (Private Messages) may be posted only with the permission of the sender. This includes messages posted to private and staff forums, such as the Staff Appeals forum at CF, and messages sent in an official capacity. While it would be churlish for a staff member of any site to refuse such permission under most circumstances, if they do, we expect that to be respected.

I liked it when the threads split after a page or so, & didn't make quoting so hard!

I guess I should stop poking & prodding the staff to think about some of their rules & their ramifications. Does it make sense to say a picture of a fetus isn't OK, but a picture of a plastic fetus is OK? The way rules evolve at CF is not well thought-out. A lot of the rules remind me of some of the strange ways rules have evolved in Orthodox Judaism, such as the law about seething a kid in its mother's evolving into needing two sets of pots, pans & dishes - one for meals that include meat & another for meals that include dairy products. The family my grandmother cooked for when she was a teenager had two whole separate kitchens!

But the suggestion that the evolution of rules might be something worth thinking through and just talking about in a way people can just freely think about them & not only campaign for one rule or another is something CF staff is not at all prepared to deal with.

Responding to ksen's post, has the majority of staff really thought about the wisdom of holding agreements sacred, to the degree that one would have to lie to protect confidentiality? I've seen posts and received PMs from staff and former staff indicating it was a matter of integrity, of keeping your word, that you would guard secrets, no matter what harm protecting the secrets would do.

I never had to take any oath of secrecy when I joined staff. I had to acknowledge a rule about confidentiality. I also noticed when asked to acknowledge various staff rules that some of them contradicted each other, and some of them seemed to be out of date. I finally asked the supervisor who was training me to please excuse me from that exercise until someone figured out which of those contradictory rules actually still applied. My request was granted, and during the whole time I was on staff, those "read & acknowledge" threads were never reviewed for consistency & timeliness.

The rules governing staff are even more crazymaking than the ones governing members.

Liz have you considered that by siding with the OBOB Catholics on this argument that you may actually be harming the interests you are trying to protect?

The problem is that secrecy is about power and sense of worth; you can't make a specific rule about that.

It derives a lot of its presumed authority from talk of confidentiality, but it has been conclusively shown that, in fact, the confidentiality of users is optional.

As concrete examples, we have the observation that staff chose to forward parts of my "private" appeal to another member without asking me, or the discussion by staff of my spouse's genitals. Clearly, user privacy is not really the issue.

In the end, knowledge is power, but it's only leverage if you have it and other people don't; that's why staff need secrecy, because without the lure of that leverage over other users, many people would not pursue staff roles.
