Definition of a Crank [Crackpot]

Quote:
Crank: "A person whose beliefs lie outside the scientific mainstream, but does not attempt serious or extensive debate with those in the mainstream. Martin Gardner, who invented the term, identified two distinguishing features of a crank.

The first is that cranks do not participate in scientific conferences or peer-reviewed journals, but instead write for journals they themselves edit, and speak before groups they themselves founded.

Second, they believe that the failure of the scientific community to adopt their beliefs represents widespread stupidity or corruption on behalf of the entire scientific community.

Not to be confused with unorthodox scholars who do participate seriously in the formal channels of academic discussion."

Red Dave, I can't help but smile at your definition, since it applies to so many lauded here. Cheers.

Please elaborate. Who specifically do you mean?

Use your imagination. Who here is highly regarded, but avoids the mainstream community, and in fact even denigrates them?

Nuh-uh.

I don't know what your personal beliefs are, so this is wooly. Please name names. Otherwise, it's just wind.

Just a guess, since my Latin course was 50 years ago: "I believe nothing except the things that I can conclude by scientific reasoning." (I'm too lazy to look up "metiri" in my Latin dictionary. I recognize it as the deponent infinitive that complements "possum", but I can't place its exact meaning.)

There are two NT citations which refute Fomenko
by a large number of centuries:

1) gThomas (binding)... 350 CE
2) gJudas (binding) ..... 280 +/- 60 CE

How does Fomenko deal with Ammianus Marcellinus?

You can play possum or quote Pogo all you want, but we still need some names.
