There needs to be some reason why both Luke and Matthew contain Davidic genealogies. As the literature stands both genealogies are kept and yet both are repudiated. This suggests that both gospels paid lipservice to a widespread belief that the messiah would be a genetic descendant of David -- Matthew literally states that Jesus was son of David in 1:1 -- and only at a later time was this position reversed with the literal conversion of Jesus into the son of god. Perhaps yet another marker of the departure of the ways with Judaism.
