I've often seen the argument that atheists can not find any behavior objectionable since, if there is no God, there is no absolute standard against which to measure the behavior. We can't find behavior objectionable with our own distates for its antisocial nature. We need God to make a decree.
That got me thinking. What is tastier, steak or cod liver oil? Clearly we can not offer an opinion unless God has made a decree in this area. Otherwise, there is no absolute standard against which to measure tastiness. I was thinking of ordering a pizza, but I can't find the part of the Bible where God ranks the tastiness of pizza against all the other foods out there. |

Can't help you there: just don't try the stew:
2 Kings 4:40 And as they were eating of the stew, they cried out and said, "O man of God, there is death in the pot." |

Well, steak is tastier, but that's a sensation motivated by the flesh, which is sinful. So although steak is tastier, the pious thing to do is order the cod liver oil. Pleasures of the flesh are bad. Punishing the flesh is good.
Or, more simply, good is bad. Bad is good. See how simple that is? However, I am a little confused about eating healthy foods. Eating healthy foods is good for the flesh, and since the flesh is bad, and doing things for the good of the flesh is bad, I probably shouldn't eat healthy. But foods that are bad for me taste good. And things that seem to the flesh to be good are bad. So eating unhealthy foods is bad. Thus, I suppose I must conclude that the only choice acceptable to God is to starve oneself. Which I suppose explains the prevalence of fasting in religious rituals. Or maybe you can get by on bread and wine your whole life, since that is the flesh and the blood of God, and apears to be acceptable for consumption. Except only in moderation, because if you drink too much wine, you start feeling good. And that's bad. ![]() Jamie |
