I've just completed reading the Bible from cover to cover for the fourth time (including all the begats and begots). Now I may not be Albert Epstein, but I'm not stupid either, and despite countless hours of tedious research I still can't spot the punchline. Could there be a page missing?

Yes, it was removed in the 6th century because it was written by a woman.
