"You have to have a religious right extremely narrow definition of Christianity to say that these things don't make him a Christian" - ohwilleke

Me - Just narrow enough to fit ohhhh a couple hundred million people worldwide (at least) into it.

Lifelong house-arrest is not just a wrist-slap.

Galileo was a devout Christian and wanted to protect the Church from becoming irrelevant by its continued opposition to scientific advancement. He hoped to enlighten the Church.

Thanks for the quote. On the other hand, if you don't have any evidence that Bormann actually DID edit the book in any significant way (as opposed to he COULD have done it), next time, just say so.

Thanks again,

If you're too lazy to read the references I post, just say so, and I'll stop posting them.

You seem to be aware of the scientific sophistication of classical Greece. Some might say the conditions for modern science did indeed exist then -- but somehow failed to coalesce. True, though, that Christians can in no way be implicated for this failure.

I'm halfway thru it at the present time. Very stimulating, but I would never claim to be halfway an expert. You're joking around, Bede.

Reading Dawkin's Blind Watchmaker alone doesn't make you an expert on evolution. Adding Darwin's Origin of the Species still doesn't make you an expert on evolution. Reading those two books stops you from being an ignoramus about evolution, that's all. To be an expert on evolution you have to study a few years at university, under a professor.

I'm with Dawkins on the opinion that evolution and theism cannot - repeat, cannot - be reconciled. I've written an article about this:

You know, you guys ought to tell every major encyclopedia in the world that the Christians didn't destroy the library at Alexandria. While I wasn't there and my archeological expeditions are few and far between, this "myth" is persistent if every widely available authority perpetuates it.

I put this on par with the neo-nazis that claim that there was no holocast. Christians would like to believe that no wrong agaist humanity ever took place in the name of the almighty lord but they're going to have a hard time rewriting history.
(Hmmm...perhaps if they burned down some more libraries and killed some more heretics...)

BTW, Nomad, you still haven't responed to the questions put upon you regarding God's rape laws. Do you no longer wish to defend your God's perfect justness? Can't blame you for giving up the fight, though, it's hard to battle compassion and reason.

Hec, I'm an atheist and I don't buy this. There is far more to theism than just Christian theism. I'm not sure how one would even come up with an objective standard for whether something is "reconciled" or not.

True and rather depressing.

Then you are an ignorant fool. Read my essay and critique it if you can. But if you start comparing me (a left liberal) to the Nazis (neo or otherwise) I'll come around to your house and act very non Christian. (Note to modertors: this threat should be taken figuratively).
