Actually I think Amos is right about Joyce being symbolic. He used 11:32 in one of his books and Romans 11:32 is

And, yeah, why couldn't Jesus have said them all, deank? Imo, there are much better things to choose than that if you want to complain about the doctrine of inerrancy!

Well, I've never attempted to verify this, since the Jesus story doesn't interest me all that much (and you have to be brain-dead to think that the gospels are a totally true narrative), but a xian apologist told me that "My god, why hast thous forsaken me?" is a quotation from the psalms.

What I want to know is why none of the gospel accounts includes "Always look on the bright side of life" as the last words.

Ok, a couple different perspectives. By the way, some of the responses are pretty funny.

Biblically - All four writers had a particular version of Christian belief and their gospels reflect that. The writers didn't necessarily know his last words. They wrote them within within their own theological framework.

Seriously - First, he thought the Kingdom he was preaching would come while he was still alive. Then he changed his tune after he was rejected left and right by his fellow Jews. The gospels hint that at the last supper he knew he was going to be killed. So he preached that the kingdom would come soon after his death. Hence, the reason early Christians all believed the kingdom was coming within their generation.

Humorous - So, on the cross, he was thinking, "shit, hope I'm right about this."

I think because each of the gospels says something to the effect of "He said this, and then he died." As though the former immediately preceded the latter. I don't have the "good" book on me, but it's one of the things I remembered, along with Judas' multiple deaths.
