Default Nomen Sacrum and Mark 8:34

Quote:
Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny (ἀπαρνησάσθω) himself and take up (ἀράτω) their cross (σταυρὸν) and follow me."
Mark Goodacre had a theory about the nomen sacrum in the Gospel of Peter where the strange story about the 'talking cross' should have been the talking crucified one. I have a variation on that idea here. I wonder whether the original gospel manuscripts simply had a στ here:

Quote:
Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny himself and take up their στ and follow me."
or in some cases a digamma ϛ or episemon to replace the στ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digamma
Quote:
Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny himself and take up their ϛ and follow me."
whereby the στ originally stood for stigma rather than cross:

Quote:
Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny himself and take up their brand and follow me."
The reason for this is that Clement cites a related text in a similar text in a similar way:

Quote:
"Unless ye hate father and mother, and besides your own life, and unless ye bear the sign."
compare:

Quote:
Luke 14:26, 27 If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

Matthew 10:37, 38 Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

Turn semeion to episemon and you have the same reading basically.

The Sibylline Oracles VIII 244 - 5 call the cross sphragis episemos "illustrious seal", but episemos is also the Greek name for the letter F, which could therefore indicate Jesus
