I think that in Gnostic Christianity, Satan really is not such a bad guy - even has his own book for the bible. In fact it is Yaltabaoth (the one who created Eden, the material world & Adam and Eve) who is the real asshole - and the one that Jesus was supposed to "save" everyone from.

Imagine the fundie's reaction to know that they are really worshiping, what some believe to be, a malevolent wannabe god.

Indeed, the gnostics took a very "literal" look at Genesis, saw the repeated creations, saw some of the problems, and concluded thusly.

The Hypostasis of the Archons is the text in the Nag Hammadi Library where the demiurge "Samuel" claims he is the one god only to have the voice of "incorruptibility" tell him he is wrong!
