Default UPDATE

Still no word. Either this person is not in a hurry, or it was a dead end.

I consider the issue closed, but if by some event I do hear from him, I will let you guys know.

Here's the source of the request: he's looking for an atheist who's in a foxhole RIGHT NOW - someone who is over there.

Hi there. I'm pursuing what we hope would be a cover story for the nation's second-largest magazine, in which we'd profile an atheist in foxhole, someone who's now serving in Iraq.

I'm going through various folks who are well connected here, but, given what's on your website, felt I should certainly check in with the both of you.

People are sending blast emails to their membership and contacts with our request, and having candidates email me direct to respond (email preferred over phone).

Our intention: To do a thoughtful, tasteful examination of what it's like to go through battle without a religious resource set (outward or internal) to depend upon. We know that the adage, "There are no atheists in foxholes," isn't true.

How do atheists prepare themselves mentally for battle?

Here's my last military-themed cover, one with a Saving Private Ryan theme.

It got the biggest (positive) response from readers, easily, for cover stories we've done in 2002. The family is still going on television, having appeared and continuing to appear on CNN, Fox, Today Show, MSNBC and everyone else:

For background: USA Weekend is the nation's second-largest magazine, with an estimated 23.7 million in circulation and 48.7 million readers. (The circulation is larger than that combined of Vanity Fair, ESPN, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Oprah, Newsweek, People, Time, Sports Illustrated and US News & World Report.)

It is carried in more than 590 newspapers, including the New York Daily News, the Arizona Republic, Indianapolis Star, the Denver Post, the Chicago Sun-Times, the Detroit and San Francisco combined newspapers and the Los Angeles Daily News.

Interview subjects for cover stories and features have included President Bush and First Lady Bush, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg and Tiger Woods.

If you'd like to discuss first, no problem.

Just let me know.

Best,

Dennis McCafferty
