Might it mean that you try to bring your desires, feelings, and thoughts to a harmony with those of Jesus? And so you become like Jesus because you have internalized him. Hence, "Jesus is in your heart"? Or something like that? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Begs the question. What were the desires, feelings and thoughts of Jesus of Nazareth? Which of the many contradictory sources of information about this are we to believe? Even if we do this successfully, and regardless of the positive effect it may have, how are we to know that this course of action rather that another is the correct way to gain eternal salvation, assuming there is such a thing?

I don't think True Christian is going to respond, but perhaps we just need to set some criteria for some True (fundie)Christian characteristics. I would propose the following for starters:

(1) Fatness
(2) Hair Height
(3) Depth of make-up (mostly for females)
(4) Ability to smile lovingly while condemning you to an eternity of unimaginable pain.

Any other suggestions?

PS: Lay off Helen, guys. From what I've seen she is a very nice person and doesn't deserve what she's getting here. Or is there some sort of free thinkers dogma that I haven't been apprised of yet.

That's kind of you, Biblebelted but I'm ok...does anyone seriously want to know what "Jesus in your heart" means or are you all merely taking the piss? I thought it was the latter; I'm assuming you know that 'heart' is figurative language and besides a phrase referring to Jesus' current presence won't make sense to anyone who thinks Jesus has been extinct for 2,000 years...

Feel free to share with me how serious your questions were, if they really were serious...

I know this wasn't my question, but maybe I could answer with my thoughts on this. I think that a "True" Christian is someone who believes in the heart and mind that Jesus is Lord (Rom. 10:9-10).

If it was just something I thought in my mind, then I would just go through the religious aspects of "doing" church. If it was only in my heart, then on the days that I don't "feel" like being a good Christian, or spending time with God in prayer and Biblestudy, then I would let my emotions overcome me and bail out. You have to hold to Christ being Lord in both mind and heart.

I think too that the understanding of heart means the very being or essence of a person. It's more than just a feeling, it touches the very depths of who I am. A Chistian enters into a relationship with God. This relationship is very real and needs to be treated like any real relationship, in that, you spend time with each other and respect eachother.

I don't always agree on all Theological points with other Christians, but I think if someone has
the understanding of Rom. 9:9-10 that I do (and a safe assumtion that the rest of the Evangelical churches do) he/she is "saved".

Many many years ago, when I really thought I was a Christian, Christians had creeds, condensed statements which defined their faiths. These seem to have gone out of fashion and the majority of Christians who post here seem to make up their Christianity as they go along. (Except for Amos, with him it's the other way around, Christianity makes him up as it goes along.) In other words, each Christian makes up his or her own version of Christianity, with little or no overlap between the versions.

I was a Christian because:

"I believe in God the Father Almighty, make of Heaven and Earth, and in Jesus Christ our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, was crucified, dead and buried. On the third day he arose from the dead. He ascended into Heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father, whence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting."

Points to notice:

I can accept evolution as an accurate. It's Jesus, not God who judges me. There is no mention of Hell. I can be forgiven, not matter whether I have been naughty or nice (useful at Christmas). I get my my body back after I am dead (I hope they do something about the eyes before I get it back, this lot are woeful). I live forever with an actual body, not as some spirit.

Now, can any of you condense your faith into a similar form? How long would it take to do it? Where does it differ from the above and why?
