Interesting, doghouse...my ex-wife tried to get an anesthesiology position at Virginia tech.

My location will probably be enough of a clue to tell you exactly who she is. We'll see.

I seem to recall that something like 20% or more of vets end up allergic to animals after they are through with vet school. Is this true? A surgeon I knew at Cornell developed strong allergies in vet school, and that was the stat that he related to me.

Well I can't speak for what the recommended course of study is, but you really can get a degree in just about anything and still make it as a vet (or a lawyer, or doctor, or anything else). As long as you know the material, you should be fine (although colleges may want you to take specific courses to be sure you know it).

My parents are both veterinarians, and they received their bachelor's in agriculture. I believe my mom said the program actually recommended agriculture over biology.

I'm not sure but wouldn't be surprised. I think allergies to animals affect about 10-15% of the general population, so that would be pretty close, even if vets weren't at increased risk. And I do know health care workers are at substantially increased risk to latex allergy because of repeated exposure to gloves, so the same may hold for allergies to animals.
