The Lone Ranger:

For what it's worth, there's no reason that these two hypotheses have to be mutually-exclusive. Perhaps the shape of the female breast evolved to help babies feed. After that, there might well have been selective pressure for men to prefer women with firm, symmetrical breasts as mates, since they're likely to be healthier.]
From Zetek's article:

Quote:
Bentley says, "It could be a combo here. The pressure for the shape of the breast was initially from this need to feed the baby and then, secondarily, men may have evolved to find the breast of this shape and size more sexually interesting. The convergence of the two pressures could have evolved into more successfully reproducing females."
It looks like Lone Ranger has hit the nail squarely on the breast, er, head.

Oh Gawd! Now I've seen it all... I was doing a bit of googling and found this site, which uses some rather *unique* examples in describing sexual selection!

Actually, preference for symmetry suggests a way of selecting healthy mates, because injuries and diseases are likely to have asymmetrical effects.

I've always been a breast man. Even as a kid. Culture around here is telling me to check out a girl's ass--I personally think that means that a lot more people are gay than are letting on.

Here's an interesting one I've heard: men are excited by the cleavage of large breasts because it is similar to the cleavage of the buttocks, which is the view when gettin' some doggy style.

Boobs seem to be a main stream fetish. Which alot of people have. There are other area some people admire to like feet or stomachs.

On a semi related note. Is it for social reasons that people often find those with glasses unatractive. Or does it have to do with not wanting a mate with less then perfect eyes?.

I chanced upon some website a few months ago (url now forgotten forever) that spent many pages propounding a thesis about the evolution of breasts-as-sexual-signal in humans. (Yep, they work for me, too.) A big part of the author's point was that, say, chimps only have swollen = engorged breasts when they are nursing young, and therefore sexually inaccessible - like in humans, nursing apparently supresses ovulation in chimps, too. So his big point was that there had to be some sort of reversal (or several reversals) in humans: full-time perky or otherwise obvious breasts in women, and interpretation of such as a "good thing" by men.

I have no idea as to the accuracy of any of this, but it sounds sort of plausible, if it is true that other great apes only show off their boobs when nursing. I haven't been to the zoo lately to check.

I think that glasses are sexy. Not the two-inch-thick black plastic frames with tape in the middle kind, of course, but some kinds look really elegant and are definitely an improvement on the girl who wears them.

I think people have a lot more body fat than apes do and this allows them to float in the water... perhaps when we were getting fatter, more fat began to go towards the breasts in women for some reason, and this was selected for because of an ape-like attraction to female bottoms...
Perhaps a lot of it has to do with breasts being a very obvious difference between men and women - even with layers of thick clothing... and they are symmetrical, etc. And also men would have had a strong bond with their mother and motherly figures when they were a baby (who would have larger breasts after she was pregnant) and they'd have a subconscious attraction towards that. (Since that probably wouldn't be in their conscious memory)

True....

Other factors being equal, women who are well-nourished and healthy during puberty/adolescence tend to have larger and more symmetrical breasts than women who are malnourished and/or sickly during this portion of their lives.
May I ask where you obtained this information? I spent several years working in women's health, and I've never heard this.

No offense, but it doesn't make sense. Large breasts are mostly fat. An A-cup breast has roughly the same amount of glandular tissue as a D-cup breast. Large breasts are just fat deposits in a nice area, which is why you don't often see a very slender woman with big boobs (real ones, anyway).

Quote:
The size of a woman's breasts is not correlated with her ability to produce milk, however, so far as I know.
To lend a woman's (and mother's) perspective... I've always been small busted, yet I was the first in my peer group to need a bra. I started developing at age 8 and was pretty much done by age 12. Of course, I had stopped growing vertically by about the same age. I nursed two children with no problem, and never was bigger than a B-cup. I had enough extra milk to donate to a milk bank if there had been one nearby. And my first baby was over nine pounds, so you can imagine how much he ate.... and there were leftovers.

Quote:
In other words, men who are attracted to women with relatively large, symmetrical, and firm breasts will be (on average) picking relatively young and healthy mates.
I disagree. I spent all of this weekend at an amusement park which included a water park, and saw many a young girl in swimsuits. I noticed very few young, healthy girls who were large-breasted. The large-breasted girls I saw were mostly overweight, and lots of the normal-weighted girls had obvious padding in their tops.

I also spent the first nine weeks of my Naval service living with 86 other women in one compartment, most of whom were young and healthy. There were all sizes of breasts there, but most of the large ones belonged to women who were well-padded in other areas, too. At the end of boot camp, many had lost weight and were wearing smaller sized bras.

I think men like breasts for one reason; they are something women have that men don't. Since only women (normally) have developed breast tissue, they are a sign of femininity and are therefore attractive to men. Asking why some men like breasts is like asking why some women like broad shoulders on men, or hairy chests or beards.
