Tonight will be the first time I've ever been to see actual fossils, and what a time to lose my dinosaur virginity!

Dragon Bones from China

I've been eagerly anticipating this for weeks - we decided not to go opening weekend and hopefully avoid some of the really big crowds.

I'll be back on Monday to post my impressions, but I thought I'd get the thread started and maybe encourage people to share their experiences with fossils and good dinosaur exhibits.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, AB, Canada is certainly a treat - I try to get over there every time I get to Calgary. And I try to get to that bar our on the seven bridges road, too, of course.

You guys should check out Dinosaur Provincial Park next time you are in ALberta. It is just an hour and a half drive form Drumheller, and on the Red Deer river. They have organized tours of bonebeds and good fossil sites. At one location we went to the ground was littered with fossils over a few hundred square meters. Although you are not allowed to pick them up, you can get on your hands and knees to examine them in situ. There was litterally not a square foot that did not have bone fragments, teeth, shells or what not. Since fossils tend to stick to the skin, when I put my hand on the ground for support it would come up with many tiny fragments of fossilized materials adhering my palm. There were complete vertebrae, ribs and femurs from dinosaurs - by the dozen. In addition, the badlands - as they are called, are some of the most awsome scenery i have ever seen.
