(Laurie) I like your idea of giving equal time to Muslim holiday music. Here's an easier idea. The link below is non-believer parody lyrics to traditional Christmas carols, by Jerry Phillips. Everybody knows these tunes! Get some friends together or sing them yourself, tape it, and ask the boss for equal time for "humanist holiday hymns."

Even if you don't end up getting them played over the store's PA system, just reading these lyrics will cheer you up this holiday season! I've long wanted to assemble an atheist chorale group to harmonize these tunes. That's a tape I would treasure above all others.

Hi Laurie - Atheists United in Los Angeles has a freethought choir called the voices of Reason. You could probably track them down through that web site, or PM me.

Here's a tip...express your outrage via your clothes. A nice little devil on your tie is always a good look.
I have got a lovely t-shirt with 'the pope loves paedophiles' printed on the front. It goes down a treat with catholics!!!

Secular Future: from a legal standpoint, there is really nothing you can do. A private store can play anything it wants (as long as it complies with copyright and obscenity laws). They don't have to play Muslim or any other music to balance out Christian music.

Last year, I worked for a small firm run by a part-time charismatic minister. He was a great guy, but played loud religious music in his office (on a set of Klipsch speakers I helped him buy) and the hold "music" on the firm's phone system was the local Jesus radio station. My Methodist mother once called me at work and asked why she was preached at on hold . Anyway, my heathen co-worker and I handled it with headphones: we listened to Godsmack, Bad Religion, Howard Stern, etc. while working, totally oblivious to the religious stuff being played.

In retail, I doubt you could get away with the headphone thing though. If the store is a part of a chain, you may be able to complain to the national headquarters (and get some "friends" to complain as customers). This is one advantage to the corporate stores over mom-and-pops. If the store is a mom-and-pop, forget it.

To further echo what Toto wrote above, one thing you should ask yourself IMO, is "is this a battle worth waging?" Doing this at a job that appears temporary anyway may not be justifiable.

THOUGHTfully Yours,
Clark

Why would you want Muslim music played? I thought this was supposed to be an atheist forum. Muslims worship a god too ya' know. Or is it that you know in your heart of hearts that the Muslim god is not really the true God and that the Christian God IS the true God. Yes. I think that's it.

Goriller -

I would ask that other religious music be played (pagan, jewish, etc) to illustrate the hypocracy of some of the Christian groups. They use the 1st amendment to no avail to spread "their" message wherever they possibly can, but as soon as another religious group tries to do the same, they quickly change their tune (no pun intended).

scigirl:

Do you think a Muslim owned store that plays Islamic music should also be required to play Christian music?

Was that a "Yes" or a "No" in answer to my question?
