I'm talking not about undiscovered fields, but about work that researchers know needs doing, for which they can't acquire the necessary funds.

i.e. cancer research and brain research

You seriously believe that no one is funding cancer research?

For what it's worth, "brain research" referred to the neurosciences, but I'm getting in over my head with those examples. What's more, I got distracted from my intent in starting this thread--to drum up remarks on the *prevalence* of nonscience agents in the research funding process.
