(d) The supervising officers and teachers in charge of public, private or parochial schools may offer at least one full period per week, for the purpose of affirming and developing allegiance to and respect for the Flag of the United States of America, and for the promoting of a clear understanding of our American way of life, with all of the unparalleled individual opportunities, and our republican form of government, with its responsiveness to majority decisions and demands. Such elements shall be included in this program as instruction in the fundamental principles of our form of government, an understanding of the provisions of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Constitution of the United States of America, the values to be found in the freedom of speech, of religion and of the press..
Splendid! The Bill allows kids one full period per week in which kids can be taught that the Bill itself is unconstitutional and a violation of the American Way.

I wish someone would form a non-violent direct action form of protest against this. Maybe doing something like standing up and turning ones back to the direction everyone is facing.

If you get enough people to do it the disruption will create a stir.

I'm planning one. I'm thinking of a letter to parents in my kids' school, asking them to talk to their kids about free speech and freedom from government coercion, and seeing if I can get enough people who'll try and get their kids to remain silent throught the pledge.

It's incredibly risky in a conservative place like this, but I think there are enough enlightened parents that it might work. The key will be wrapping myself in the flag in a way that makes it clear the distinction between true patriotism and the Constitutional foundations of this country, and the cheap sentimental patriotism embodied in the legislation.

Ideas?

This one's heating up quickly. The new law goes into effect today, but Pennsylvania education officials said they won't enforce it for the time being. A high school student and a small private school have filed suit requesting a declaration that the law is unconstitutional.

And I am certain the fuckers that supported this ridiculous law knew that would happen. Pricks.

Of course they did, and now they'll be pointing out how they're better Americans that the rest of you.

Isn't that why you kept your right to private firearms?

Thumbs down

Dear Mrs. Fundie,

We have reason to believe that your son is either a gay, a communist or an athiest. Perhaps all three. He refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance this morning and we all know: they are the only people who do that kind of thing. The state legislature of Pennsylvania insists it is the duty of the school to inform you of your son's defective character so you may take corrective action. If he joins the People's Queer Taliban for Athiests and blows up decent, money-earnin', baby-makin' God-fearin' Americans, you'll have only yourself to blame.

Please do remember that the state has strict standards for what types of beatings may be used as punishment and which are defined as child abuse. If you have any questions, please feel free to call our dean of boys. He will be more than happy to ensure your disciplinary action stays within the constraints of the law.

Remember, veterans groups died to put "under God" into the Pledege of Allegiance back in 1492... or something like that.

Sincerely,

Principal B.P. Hammer
