Note to all: Please include any references you use once you start work on a particular word or words, so that we don't lose them--they can also be used as further reading.

Thanks Joel,

We now have 230 entries.

You never did get round to answering my question regarding whether we can include names of historical figures in antiquity like Josephus, Tacitus, Phlegon, Celsus etc - at least those that did touch early christianity.

You think we can incorporate them later? After all, I see some as unavoudable when defining words like Carpocratian, Pythagoorean, Valentinian, Platonism, Basilidian, Albigensians, Manichaeism, Mandaenism etc
Ok, if we do start the Christian heresies/sects definitions, then I'd agree with adding the above, but as you say, at a later date ("Writers," "Sects," etc. as sub-headings). In the meantime, to list all the thousands of Christian sects and beliefs would be a bit silly (see Theology Web's glossary--we can do so much better than that with proper referencing and authoritative definitions). Important thing first is to set realistic tasks and get suitable volunteers. The other thing is we don't need to reinvent the wheel and duplicate Peter's ECW website, so that can be a further reference.

What would be wrong with having the entries as below without the Greek transliterations, superscripts etc? Maybe the transliterations can be part of the definitions of the entries?

Codex
Codex Alexandrinus
Codex Bezae Cantabrigiensis
Codex Claramontanus
Codex Ephraemi Syri receptus
Codex Koridethianus
Codex Laudianus
Codex Sinaiticus
Codex Vaticanus
Codex Washingtonianus
That should be fine.

More words:

ANE
Diaspora
Samaritan Canon
Syro-Palestine

Some of the words (e.g. LXX/Septuagint, Torah/Pentateuch) would better be combined as a single entry with the less-used one refering to the more commonly used one.

As for Jack-t-B's question, I'm a little unsure about including those words in (let alone "religion"). Perhaps we can, but perhaps we should just refer to websites elsewhere.

Ok.

I agree. So I will cut them out.

I agree. Though Peters ECW site is for detailed reading/ research - not intended as a glossary.

Ok so those kinds of words go

I have just visited the theologyweb. I can't see why Celsus thinks its "silly".
What I can see is that its very general. Even simple words and irrelevant abbreviations are included in it.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we now have 280 entries. Thats about it. Tomorrow, we start serious work.
