I must be careful not to mix light banter and bad humor with serious topics, less I'm accused again of dipping into the proverbial "well of ignorance".

(of course, my daddy always said the only stupid question is the one not asked)

Franc, no, the last part was not a "parody". Scientific studies have proven measureable benefits to many types of mediation (reduction in bp, lower cholesterol, etc.). Then there's the general comfort and sense of well being it brings. (as does prayer to some) Granted, I will acknowledge that meditation may be the result of some "natural" process in the brain. Still, if it feels good and doesn't hurt anyone I say go for it! And it sure makes me feel spiritual!

As for a debate in philosophy, no, I'll pass. I have seen some of your powerhouses in the Philosophy forumn and they'd no doubt chew me up and spit me out in little clown pieces! It's sort of like the gun control debate: both sides have valid points. There's no "right" answer. And it usually comes down to the person that's most versed in the subject, or who has good debate and rhetoric skills.

My 2 cents, think I'll punch out for now. Beep! Beep!

Being the sadist that I am, I listen to Christian talk radio to and from work, both for the humor value and to listen to the misconceptions and misinformation about science, atheists, and everything secular.
Wow, I do that too! I can't help cracking up when they suggest that their listeners "invite a non-believer to listen to our program tomorrow." If they only knew how many of us were already tuning in and alternately seething and chuckling!

Does there necessarily have to be a "first cause" for the universe? Couldn't it have always existed?
I think it's extremely difficult for our limited brains to wrap themselves around the concept of "eternity." Especially going backwards in time. All of us personally have a beginning. There was a time when we didn't exist, and now we do. Going forward in time it gets a little easier. We can imagine ourselves continuing to exist forever - that's one reason why religion came to be invented.

If you think that's hard, try to imagine what you would find if you went to the edge of the physical universe. It's got to end somewhere, right? What's outside of it?
