It is my understanding that BSA has lost a lot of financial support because of the case with the gay boy, now this thing with the atheist. I wonder how much more financial bleeding they can take before they get the message.

The PR beating they are taking is substantial. I just watched the CNN interview of Darrell Lambert, and he did a wonderful job defending himself. Excellent interview.</strong>
Lambert's situation was the focus of the final few minutes of ABC's national news tonite. He's a very articulate person, and obviously getting some serious attention.

He's definitely making some people in the BSA look like the religious bigots they are, and doing it without malice. Very decent indeed.

Me too! As if it weren't bad enough that the United Way supports BSA, they're even hypocritical about it (italic is mine):

Quote:
United Ways ensure that each organization in which they invest is a non-profit, tax-exempt charity governed by volunteers, and that it submits to an annual, independent financial audit, provides services at a reasonable cost, and maintains a policy of non-discrimination.

*katie,

Thanks for pointing out that policy statement.

I just sent an email to the administrator of the local United Way, politely asking how his organization can remain affiliated with BSA in light of the BSA's open discrimination based upon sexual orientation and religion, which conflicts with UW's stated policy of "non-discrimination."

Lambert had an editorial in the Seattle Times and had this to say.

Quote:

On Dec. 15 1791, 10 out of 12 amendments to the U.S. Constitution were adopted and became known as the Bill of Rights. The First Amendment of this document is religious freedom.

[intervening paragraphs snipped]

The Supreme Court decided BSA leadership has the right to limit the organization to certain groups of people.

The question is, do they have the moral right to do such a thing and defy their own rules, which state that BSA can adopt bylaws, rules and regulations not inconsistent with the laws of the United States of America and states thereof.
Damn, talk about a smack down.
