Post Drug-Resistant Bacteria in Detorit

I am officially afraid:

<a href="http://www.freep.com/news/health/nstaph12_20021112.htm" target="_blank">Germs develop a deadly defense.</a>

For years I've heard people warning about this sort of thing, but I've never seen a news item reporting it actually happening. Eek!

Our days of whooping up on bacteria with antiobiotics are almost over. Here is an interesting page on <a href="http://www.esb.utexas.edu/palmer/bio303/group13/vr.html" target="_blank">vancomycin resistance.</a> And <a href="http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/795_antibio.html" target="_blank">here's an overview</a> of antibiotic resistant infections.

Don't spend any more time in a hospital than you have to. You're more likely to get an infection there than anywhere else.

A few years ago, my dad broke both of his wrists in a fall. He nearly died in the hospital due to a virulent strain of Staph that he contracted at the hospital.

It is said that there are many antibiotics in rain forests. The climate is ripe for bacteria growth, humid and warm, so many plants, insects and animals have developed means to combat infection, according to a "Tough Science" program on a PBS TV broadcast I saw recently. We are going to need to explore these, and preserve the jungles rather than let Mercedes Benz and other companies seek the tropical hardwoods for dashboards and cattle ranchers seek to make grazing land for cattle, etc.

Would that be "Rough Science", Chip?
That's a great series.

End of nitpick and digression.

History question: After the appearance of penecillin, when did biologists begin predicting the emergence of resistance?

Thanks PS418. Man, them sites are scarier than John Ashcroft's plans for our future.

I don't know, Vork. At least the bacteria aren't claiming to work "in the best interests of America" and then stabbing at our civil liberties when our backs are turned. With bacteria, you know where you stand.

Yeah. We wouldn't want those exotic tropical bacteria to die out just because we destroyed their environment would we. Also, How may dashboards can Mercedes make from one tree? Are they really going to make that many Mercedes? It sounds good to me if we are all going to end up with 17 each

Oh yeah, "Rough Science." How 'bout that "Detorit?" LOL.

So, how many doctors use their "six-figured" income to buy a Mercedes or two or three or more? Do they lovingly run their fingers over the Teak wood dash plates before going into their practice to over-prescribe antibiotics?

Thanks, Chip

Edited for spelling corrections.
