Default High protein diet works

All I know is that my husband has been on a "modified" Atkins diet and it works. He has soy protein powder mixed in with an egg substitute such as Better n Eggs, for breakfast. This holds him till lunch when he eats a whole cake of tofu and seven slices of sliced deli turkey. This holds him till dinner when he has a chicken breast or pork shop or steak or fish fillet, some stir fry veggies and one small, white potato. No coffee, wine or beer, bread or pasta.

In two and a half months, he lost 30 pounds WITH NO EXERCIZING!

I have now been on the diet for two weeks and have lost 2 pounds. I still have my toast in the morning, my single cup of coffee at work and my glass of wine at night, though.

Give it a try.

Sounds like a plan, Gilly54. However, your hubby (and you) may get bored in the long run if eating the same foods daily. Three suggestions to address this:

1. Learn to cook (if you don't already). I did.
2. Get low carb recipes from the many websites available, e.g. Atkinscenter.com has a load of recipes.
3. Find and use low carb substitutes for high carb foods, e.g., there are at least two commercial low carb ice creams now available that are pretty good (or make your own) , there's at least three good low carb breads available, and many dessert products made with Splenda (or you can make your own, e.g., cheesecake using eggs, cream, Splenda, and cocoa powder, in a ground nut/butter crust!). Also, by not having a sugar Jones anymore, you can eat amazingly small amounts of such foods and be satisfied.

Anecdotal and stuff but....

After observing a few of my friends and relatives on the Atkins diet, I have started referring to it as the Magician's Diet. It seems to busy your attention with the carbs and smokescreens while causing you to eat less without realizing it. POOF. The weight has disapeared! Thank you for buying my book.

Care to elaborate as to which part is a load of utterly meaningless crap? Are you referring to the Bronsted/Lowry Concept of Acids and Bases? Admittedly, it is a bit simple, but more than sufficient to demonstrate my point.
Are you referring to my contention that calcium does not function as an acid? If so, please explain where my chemistry is errant. Perhaps I should have further elucidated my point by stating that calcium is an element unto itself. IT HAS NO PROTONS TO DONATE. It therefore, cannot function as an acid.
Or perhaps, you're referring to my anti-Atkins argument in its entirety? Which parts do you disagree with, and which parts of my contentions are unsubstantiated by the scientific literature?

Please, I would sincerely like to know where I have transgressed.

The best diet I have found to lose weight myself is to get busy enough not to get time to eat between the meals (always full meals, seated at the table - no snacks, even if I am alone). + suppress all kind of candies (chocolate:{). Drinking only water should be a part of it, but it is already what I do. (I do not caonsider my morning milk as a drink -to rehydrate- but as a liquid food).If course, I already know how to cook, and i use this knowledge.

Basically, all the studies I've seen on low-carb, high-protein diets were short-term, like 90 days or less, but over that short time the diets were not associated with any obvious adverse effects, and were effective. The JAMA review article that was released a few days ago stated that there is insufficient evidence at this time to make a recommendation for or against the diet.

I wonder about the longer-term effects, though. Is anyone aware of any studies addressing the longer-term effects (6 months or longer), particularly on kidney function, of Atkins-like diets? Can't high-portein diets cause kidney stones, for instance?

Since you are the nutritionist, you have the background and knowlwedge to tell me why it works. I'm just a layperson, all I know is I'm losing weight with none of the normal diet side-effects.

Lying aside, why not tell me why it works instead of pissing on my leg.

Try reading my earlier posts in this thread. If there are any specific issues you wish me to address on your behalf, I am more than willing to do so, either through this board or through a private email conversation.

I've read all of your posts criticising the diet, but I see no explanation as to why it works. You seem very passionate about how much the diet sucks, why not direct that passion into figuring out how come, despite all your protests to the contrary, it works?

The idea that the diet works because of self-deception falls flat to me. Your criticisms of the diet sound reasonable to me, but only underscore the failure to explain why the damn thing works.
