Post Question for Hebrew Speakers

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0385495323/internetinfidelsA" target="_blank">The Code Book</a> by Simon Singh, p.26, refers to Atbash, a traditional form of Hebrew substitution cipher which replaces each letter with the letter equidistant from the end of the alphabet. The example given is 'Sheshach' in Jeremiah, which is code for 'Babel'.

Any idea why this would be done? Are there other examples besides Jeremiah?
