While the arguments for design and fine tuning have only the most tenuous factual backing, and perhaps none at all, I must disagree that they are identical to classical creationist ideas. As has been stated there are supporters of ID who do not dispute evolution or the ancient age of the Earth.

But I do pretty much agree that ID is looked on by plenty of religious fundies as a 'foot in the door' argument for their God. I strongly doubt there is a single supporter of the theory who is being completely intellectually honest, with himself or with those disputing him.
