Looking at excreationist's stages, I can't decide when consciousness comes in. I believe it is at the point where a person can place himself in a mental image of his surroundings. All of the behavior mentioned in the stages can be done unconsciously, even learning abstract symbols.

Julian Jaynes said he had a test he would present to his students. He said "when the school bell chimes, write down what you were thinking about. Those thoughts are what consciousness is made of."

Here is something to think about. Is consciousness continuous? I believe it is perceived to be that way, but it is an illusion, because we cannot be conscious of the gaps in consciousness.

Can one be conscious of being conscious?
Can perception alone be proof of consciousness?
Or should perception be accompanied by thought and decision making?
