Ventura Refuses NDP Proclamation

Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura is refusing to sign a
proclamation supporting the National Day of Prayer — no
great surprise. But you might raise an eyebrow or two when
you hear what he set aside a whole month to celebrate.

Jesse Ventura, the former pro wrestler turned Minnesota
governor, has proclaimed June as "Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual,
Transgender Pride Celebration Month."

Tom Prichard, who heads the Minnesota Family Council, is
incensed not only with Ventura's pro-homosexual
proclamation, but also with his refusal to offer the same
courtesy to the upcoming National Day of Prayer.

"He won't sign a proclamation — which nearly every other
governor in the country has — recognizing prayer and the
importance of that in our nation's history and the lives of
millions of Americans," Prichard said.

The National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 2.

A spokesman for Ventura said the governor's refusal to issue
a proclamation had to do with the so-called "separation of
church and state."

"I see that as a real smokescreen," Prichard said.

He added if Ventura is right, that would mean the father of our
country was wrong.

"Proclamations were issued from the very beginning of our
nation's history," Prichard said. "George Washington, our first
president, issued one. Since 1952, every president has been
regularly issuing them."

Jim Weidmann, vice chairman of the National Day of Prayer
Task Force, said the National Day of Prayer is part of our
nation's history.

"This is a day that was set aside by our government, put into
law by the president, that we would come together as a nation
and we would lift up our nation before God," Weidmann said.

Last year, more than 30,000 separate events were held
around the country, involving 4 million people. Weidmann said
ultimately, citizens don't need a governor's proclamation to
pray, and added he'll still be praying for Jesse Ventura.

"I pray for all the leaders — those who believe and those who
don't believe — because I believe God can work in their
hearts, that decisions will come down that reflect His heart for
His people," Weidmann said.

First established in 1952 and signed into law by Harry
Truman, the theme of this year's National Day of Prayer is
"America United Under God."

Good for Jesse!! We should all write him a letter thanking him for being the LONE voice of reason!

It's truly sad when one of the most reasonable men in government is a former PRO Wrestler!

Minnesotta will simply be another state my mother refuses to go to because of their equitable treatment of homosexuals. I think I need to buy property in Vermont and Minnesotta, perhaps then my mother won't want to visit!

I like Jesse. Sometimes he puts his foot in his mouth, but in general, he's really good at cutting through the crap. However, I think this makes a lot of people uncomfortable. Especially the sheep. I don't know if he'll be reelectable.

I live in Minnesota, and IMHO, overall Jesse has been a mediocre governor and kind of an asshole. But this almost makes up for it. I wrote him a letter thanking him for not proclaiming the NDP during his first year. I should have written one every year.

What's ironic is this statement:

Bingo! That's the great thing about America, and it's precisely why the federal and state governments shouldn't be involved in the NDP.

I would almost move to Minnesota just to be able to vote for you, except it is too darn cold. So I will just stay in Florida and put up with Shrub, Jr.
Congratulations on your stance on not going on with the sheep on the 'day of pray' nonsense. I only wish more politicians would stand up for what they know is right instead of baaing. This year this activity is going to be an even more blatant at pandering to the right wing. I wish this law could be overruled.
Anyway, thanks for being a lone voice of reason.

He's a mediocre governor, sure--but is there any other kind?

In most states the governor has very little real power. If he is politically deft he can increase his influence, but the governorship of minnesota has very few official powers.

He signs off on the budget and is commander of the minnesota guard--what else can he do?

What's scary is the idea that hundreds of thousands of sheep are out there reading articles like this one from Focus on the Family or watching Pat Robertson's "news" show and are accepting them as journalism, not seeing it for the slanted trash it truly is.

I just love this one: "...so called separation of church and state...".
