Good job.

Here are some more quotes (Smile -- as if you need MORE...).

Also an explanation how Jews became associated with the anti-christ and were depicted with horns.

"According to John Chrysostom:

"I know that a great number of the faithful have a certain respect for the
Jews and hold their ceremonies in reverence. This provokes me to eradicate
completely such a disastrous opinion... Since they have disowned the
Father, crucified the Son, and rejected the Spirit's help, who would not dare
to assert that the synagogue is not a home of demons? God is not worshiped
there; it is simply a home of idolatry...The Jews are possessed by demons,
they are handed over to impure spirits...Instead of greeting them and
addressing them by so much as a work you should turn away from them as
from the pest and a plague of the human race."

*St. Jerome called Jews "vipers" and "cursers of Christians".

St. Jerome linked Jews with the concept of the anti-Christ--the apocalyptic
incarnation of evil. (In a Strausbourg picture book entitled THE ANTICHRIST
(1480), it is typically Jews who flock around the antichrist, proclaiming
in satanic reverence, "Yea, God hath come!" (Heiko A. Oberman, THE ROOTS
OF ANTI-SEMITISM, translated by James I. Porter, (Fortress Press translation,
1984), p 42)

*It was St. Jerome's translation of the Bible into Latin (known as the
Vulgate) that incorrectly took the Hebrew verse of Exodus 34:29,35:

"and behold the skin of his [Moses'] face sent forth beams"

and mistranslated this as:

"and behold his face had horns."

(That is, the Hebrew word karan meaning "was radiant" was confused
with keren, which means "horn".)

As a consequence of this error, paintings and carvings of the Jews during
the Middle Ages depicted ALL Jews as having horns--and the implication was
that they were associated with the Devil himself."

On many occasions, when their high-powered debtors decided they did not want to pay back their debts, they relied on the "Christ's murderers" tradition to expel the Jews and default on their obligations. To many, this would appear to be a case of misuse of Scripture and tradition to justify actions that would otherwise be condemned. (This paragraph would greatly benefit from evidence and examples.)
Check out Barbara Tuchmann's A Distant Mirror if you want examples. The book is about the 14th century in general, so she doesn't really attempt to give a massively in-depth look at the Jewish situation, but she does discuss it in one chapter and provides several examples.

Sorry for hooking up here, but the original posts are terribly long, although excellent material. Thanks somebody.

It's been my experience from participating in faith based forums, particularly those sponsored
by the Church of Christ people, that fundamentalist thinking Christians tend to be much more anti-semitic than the more moderate sects. I think there's more to it than the standard prejudice or discrimination exhibited by the typical anti-semitic. Fundies are at odds with Judaic beliefs and the canon law, or Mosaic law, more than with the Jewish people who practice Judaism. This shouldn't surprise anyone because they are frequently at odds with any other Christian sect who holds views of scripture
that don't agree with theirs. Hey, they can't even agree within themselves, so to say they are anti-semitic is and understatement of their viewpoints.

I myself have often wondered why Jews are lightning rods in that they attract so much persecution and discrimination. Why don't the Christians pick on the Hindus or the Buddhists, or some other major religion that is not of the western world? I don't know, but maybe some of the anti-semitism we observe has little basis in religious principles and is more akin to that kind of discrimination we see exhibited by whites towards blacks in America. I'd like to see this discussion continue from the standpoint of anti-semitism in general and not that dependent upon or resulting from scriptural differences of opinion.

Please note that I didn't copy this from the original -- I forwarded a post from the following URL:

Also, please note that the original poster added the following paragraph as a foreward:
"Historically, a number of Christians have practiced anti-semitism (compare to Persecution of Christians). The severity, type and extent of it has varied much over time; the earliest form was theological anti-semitism."

Jeez RJ, you've got 4 threads running about Jews & Christianity. If you'll check the rest of the site you'll see this as clearly excessive.

If you've got a point, how about stating it clearly & then using each link you've raised a new thread for, as a reference in that *single* thread.

New thread : Hey look at this !
Next thread : Hey look at this !
Next thread : Hey look at this !
Next thread : Hey look at this !

You'll gain more respect by posting a coherent point of view than by clogging up the forum.
