I would rate the GAMOW and rally a success. I really didn't expect the "10,000" participants that were rumored to be attending. While I wish more freethinkers had shown up, the 2,000 to 2,400 were enough to establish a presence. In that sense it was mission accomplished.

More is being don and there is more to do. What is being done is that atheist/humanist/freethought groups are forming at the local level. I belong to New York City Atheists and I'm in contact from time to time with other atheist groups including subscribing to atheist forums in South Carolina and Alabama(!). [Note: I have a special place in my heart for Alabama atheists. Coming out as an atheist here in New York City is tantamount to coming out as a brunette--who cares? But in Alabama you literally take your life in your hands.]

For the future we should definitely consider some kind of outreach to those theists who support us (and feel supported by us) on constitutional issues such as separation of church and state. I know for a fact that there are fundamentalist Christians who don't want prayer in school because they feel that it is their right and responsibility to teach religion to their children, not the state's. We can work together on issues such as these without ever having to convince other people that our philosophy is correct. What we have to do is convince people--religious and non-religious--that separation of church and state is in everyone's best interest.
