Wasn't Hannah Ahrendt the historian who wrote about the horrifying fact that Adolf Eichmann (one of Hitlers top men, he organized the deportation and killing of the european jews) was so absolutely normal ? If I recall correctly, the world reacted absolutely shocked to her book about that subject. They needed to believe that Nazi Germany was a singular and non-repeatable thing. I believe it is not. Regrettably, the title of that book escapes me.

Eichmann in Jerusalem.

The Milgram article I linked to above provides parallels to Arendt's characterization of the banality of evil with the results of Milgram's studies. It's definitely worth a read. Very chilling.
