It is my (not so humble) opinion that schools are mostly about behavior modification, not education. They teach you what to think, not how to think.

Adding the pledge into this day-to-day numbing of the mind is just one more way to kill individual thought.

Personally, I don't think children should be made to recite any sort of oath. A pledge or oath should be voluntary. Funny how almost nobody says the pledge except for school-children.
