One could always declare that one has converted to Islam and that one is looking forward to humping a harem of houris.

But you know Pensee that if you die an Atheist, a cannibal and even a Democrat your family isn't going to believe that you are burning in Hell. Hell is for other peoples families. No one thinks that any one they love is in Hell. You've seen the Christians on this board; they believe whatever they want.

I say go ahead and fake it. If it gets your relatives off your back - why not?

I wouldn't do it (at least I don't think I would, I've learned in life that sometimes ya never know *for sure* what you will do in a situation 'til it happens...) for one MAIN reason: it would only feed the theistic certainty that there are no REAL atheists, we all believe in God deep down and are just angry at him or whatever.

To see someone "stick to their guns" in the face of dying and not be freaked out about it *might* cause them to rethink that position. Maybe not, maybe even probably not, but just maybe.

Too right. My family is convinced I'm making the trip to the Pearly Gates because when I was a kid I asked Jebus to be my saviour and blahblahblah. So I know that when I croak that's how they'll be consoling themselves at the loss of my wonderfulness.
So for me, it doesn't really matter if I cave in on my deathbed due to senility or simple fright or if I'm courageous enough to maintain my convictions. It's all good for my family.

In all due respect, what the hell does that mean?
