This rule, interestingly, might hurt conservative and liberal candidates alike, for it would uniformly promote honesty and transparencey whoever the candidate might be. For instance, it might have revealed that David Souter was not inclined to overrule Roe.
Everyone knew at the time that Souter was not going to overrule Roe, and that Bush I was cynically screwing over his anti-abortion supporters from the religious right. I listened to Souter's confirmation hearings, and he made it clear he followed the major precedents set by the Supreme Court in the last half of the 20th century. (This was before the Federalist Society had produced a bumper crop of retrograde legal scholars who have figured out the legal rationale to take us backwards.)

The problem is that Bush II didn't learn from his daddy how to use the religous right without giving in to them.

Good point, Toto. I think the difference is that Bush II really is part of the religious right, whereas Bush Sr. really wasn't. In spite of Bush Sr.'s proclamation about atheists not being citizens, he also never seemed to spout off about being born again.

Thumbs up

Hezekiah, thanks for the information on our Senators! I've emailed both Kohl and Feingold to express my support for their filibuster. Let's hope it holds...
